Invisalign has grown in popularity in recent years, quickly overtaking the older traditional metal braces as the preferred method of straightening teeth. However, because it is a newer method, some patients aren’t aware of exactly how they work and what advantages they can expect from it. The following will detail the day-to-day processes patients will go through for this treatment plan. While there are many advantages to choosing Invisalign, it requires a little more work for patients who prefer this discreet method of straightening the teeth.

What is the day of an Invisalign user like?

Aligners should be worn overnight. However, first thing in the morning, you should remove them and brush them with a toothbrush and then rinse them thoroughly with cold water. You should also brush and floss your teeth as you normally would at this time. After eating breakfast and brushing your teeth again, you should replace the aligners for wear throughout the day. For those who are limited on time, it’s okay to brush only after eating rather than before and after.

Throughout the Day

While you are wearing your aligners, it’s important to restrict the drinks you consume to water. If you want to drink juice, soda or anything else, you should do it after removing your aligners. This is to keep any sugar from the drinks from accumulating on your teeth before you get a chance to brush your teeth. Chewing gum while wearing your aligners also isn’t advised. Always remove them before you eat any food to prevent damaging them. Chewing many types of foods can actually scratch or even push the aligners out of shape, which means they won’t be as effective as they should be. It will also trap food particles in between or on your teeth, which can lead to tooth decay, along with other problems like gingivitis and bad breath. Brushing after you eat is preferred, but if you don’t get the chance, always replace your aligners. Try to brush your teeth within four to six hours of eating.

Before you go to bed for the night, clean your aligners and rinse them off, as well as brush your teeth well. Either brush them or soak them for a short period of time in special cleaning crystals that are available for Invisalign. Always wear your aligners while you sleep.

New Trays

Invisalign requires the introduction of new aligners every two to four weeks. This is to accommodate your moving teeth and help keep them moving in the right direction. This treatment method eliminates soreness and other discomfort, which makes it preferred over traditional metal braces. However, there may be some mild discomfort while you get used to new aligners so you may wish to take a pain reliever.
